Antigua Guatemala

Antigua is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and was the capital city until an earthquake seriously damaged it in 1773. It is known for Semana Santa, the Catholic celebration commemorating the Passion, Crucifixion and Resurrection of Jesus Christ. Some floats weigh up to 7000 pounds and are carried by as many as 100 people. The very elaborate and colourful floral displays cover the streets. Many religious buildings were damaged and are now being slowly restored. Pacaya Volcano is a short distance from Antigua and erupts occassionally.
