Nutrition:
For background, malnutrition and ill-health have led to some of the highest infant mortality rates in Central America, and one of the lowest life expectancies at birth. Infant malnutrition rates are well over 50% among the Maya community.
In the last year, Paso donated $15,000 to the Pre-School Nutrition Program and the Growing Healthy Program. The pre-school program ensures that all students receive a healthy meal at school each day.
The Growing Healthy Program includes: the monitoring of children under 5 to check for signs of malnutrition and ill-health; the development of community gardens to provide access to fresh produce; food support packages for families at high risk of malnutrition; and involves both health professionals and Maya midwives. This seed bank provides native seeds for family and community gardens.
